Regen, Schnee, Hagel und\/oder andere Niederschl\u00e4ge gelangen in einen zylindrischen Beh\u00e4lter mit einer \u00d6ffnung an der Oberseite. Von dort flie\u00dft der Niederschlag durch eine \u00d6ffnung in eine von zwei kleinen Kippkammern, die sich um einen zentralen Drehpunkt bewegen. Diese Kammern sind pr\u00e4zise gefertigt, um eine genaue Menge an Niederschlag zu erfassen. Wenn sich eine Kammer mit der definierten Niederschlagsmenge (0,1 mm) f\u00fcllt, kippt sie um, wodurch sie entleert wird, w\u00e4hrend gleichzeitig die zweite, leere Kammer in Position gebracht wird, um im n\u00e4chsten Schritt Niederschlag aufzunehmen. Ki\u0161a, snijeg, tu\u010da i\/ili ostale oborine upadaju u valjkastu posudu s otvorom na vrhu. Oborina se zatim slijeva kroz otvor na posudi i skuplja se u jednu od dvije male komore koje se gibaju oko to\u010dke oslonca. Ove male komore napravljene su u uskim tolerancijama kako bi se postigao to\u010dan iznos padalina u svakoj od njih. Ki\u0161a se iz posude prelijeva u jednu od komora. Kada se ona napuni odgovaraju\u0107im iznosom oborine, koji je jednak inkrementu koji komora mjeri (0,1 mm), komore se prevagnu na jednu stranu i tada se puna komora prazni, a prazna dolazi na odgovaraju\u0107u poziciju da bi se u slijede\u0107em koraku u nju prelijevala oborina.
