The disease leads to a reduction in both yield quantity and fruit quality. Given that apples represent the most intensively cultivated fruit species in Croatia, annual expenses for pest and disease control range between <strong data-start=\"666\" data-end=\"699\">\u20ac1,000 and \u20ac1,500 per hectare<\/strong>, with apple scab alone accounting for <strong data-start=\"738\" data-end=\"759\">approximately 50%<\/strong> of those costs. In fact, almost the entire plant protection program for apples is structured around managing this disease, with <strong data-start=\"888\" data-end=\"921\">15 to 20 fungicide treatments<\/strong> typically applied per season.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"953\" data-end=\"956\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"958\" data-end=\"1004\"><strong data-start=\"962\" data-end=\"1002\">What Parts of the Tree Are Affected?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1005\" data-end=\"1140\">Apple scab primarily affects <strong data-start=\"1034\" data-end=\"1054\">leaves and fruit<\/strong>, although <strong data-start=\"1065\" data-end=\"1093\">young shoots and flowers<\/strong> may also be attacked under certain conditions.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1142\" data-end=\"1145\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1147\" data-end=\"1163\"><strong data-start=\"1151\" data-end=\"1163\">Symptoms<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1437\">On <strong data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1178\">leaves<\/strong>, symptoms appear as dark olive to rusty-black circular spots with indistinct edges. These spots often merge, leading to leaf distortion and premature defoliation. On <strong data-start=\"1345\" data-end=\"1354\">fruit<\/strong>, lesions develop into corky, cracked areas that significantly reduce market value.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1439\" data-end=\"1442\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1444\" data-end=\"1473\"><strong data-start=\"1448\" data-end=\"1473\">Biology of the Fungus<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1475\" data-end=\"1546\">The pathogen <em data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1509\">Venturia inaequalis<\/em> overwinters in <strong data-start=\"1525\" data-end=\"1545\">two primary ways<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"1548\" data-end=\"2576\">\n<li data-start=\"1548\" data-end=\"1939\">\n<p data-start=\"1551\" data-end=\"1675\"><strong data-start=\"1551\" data-end=\"1577\">As mycelium or conidia<\/strong> on the bark of heavily infected trees, often between bud scales or in crevices of young shoots.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1679\" data-end=\"1939\">\n<li data-start=\"1679\" data-end=\"1840\">\n<p data-start=\"1681\" data-end=\"1840\">In mild winters, these conidia may become active <strong data-start=\"1730\" data-end=\"1754\">as early as February<\/strong>, infecting young leaves with the help of <strong data-start=\"1796\" data-end=\"1813\">rain and wind<\/strong> during <strong data-start=\"1821\" data-end=\"1837\">bud swelling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1844\" data-end=\"1939\">\n<p data-start=\"1846\" data-end=\"1939\"><strong data-start=\"1846\" data-end=\"1881\">Optimal germination temperature<\/strong> for conidia is <strong data-start=\"1897\" data-end=\"1905\">16\u00b0C<\/strong>, with <strong data-start=\"1912\" data-end=\"1938\">relative humidity \u226590%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1941\" data-end=\"2576\">\n<p data-start=\"1944\" data-end=\"2057\"><strong data-start=\"1944\" data-end=\"1961\">As perithecia<\/strong> (sexual fruiting bodies) on fallen leaves, producing <strong data-start=\"2015\" data-end=\"2023\">asci<\/strong> with <strong data-start=\"2029\" data-end=\"2049\">eight ascospores<\/strong> each.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2061\" data-end=\"2576\">\n<li data-start=\"2061\" data-end=\"2133\">\n<p data-start=\"2063\" data-end=\"2133\">Perithecia <strong data-start=\"2074\" data-end=\"2094\">mature in spring<\/strong> (March to May), gradually over time.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2137\" data-end=\"2202\">\n<p data-start=\"2139\" data-end=\"2202\">Their maturation coincides with <strong data-start=\"2171\" data-end=\"2199\">bud swelling and opening<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2206\" data-end=\"2278\">\n<p data-start=\"2208\" data-end=\"2278\">The optimal temperature for ascospore development is <strong data-start=\"2261\" data-end=\"2275\">around 4\u00b0C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2282\" data-end=\"2398\">\n<p data-start=\"2284\" data-end=\"2398\">Rain is essential to trigger ascospore release. data-end=\"3340\"><strong data-start=\"3257\" data-end=\"3273\">Young leaves<\/strong> are most vulnerable; initial infections are often visible there.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3341\" data-end=\"3510\">\n<p data-start=\"3343\" data-end=\"3510\">Severely affected apple varieties, such as <strong data-start=\"3386\" data-end=\"3452\">Golden Delicious, Gloster, Mutsu, Gala, Braeburn, Granny Smith<\/strong>, have experienced <strong data-start=\"3471\" data-end=\"3493\">complete crop loss<\/strong> in some seasons.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"3512\" data-end=\"3515\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3517\" data-end=\"3546\"><strong data-start=\"3521\" data-end=\"3546\">Apple Scab Management<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4 data-start=\"3548\" data-end=\"3578\"><strong data-start=\"3553\" data-end=\"3578\">Preventive Protection<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3580\" data-end=\"3695\">Because young leaves are most susceptible, <strong data-start=\"3623\" data-end=\"3647\">preventive treatment<\/strong> is critical during early developmental stages.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3697\" data-end=\"4237\">\n<li data-start=\"3697\" data-end=\"3816\">\n<p data-start=\"3699\" data-end=\"3816\"><strong data-start=\"3699\" data-end=\"3720\">Copper fungicides<\/strong> (e.g., Nordox, Kocide, Champion, Cuprablau-Z, Champ F2) are recommended <strong data-start=\"3793\" data-end=\"3813\">before flowering<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3817\" data-end=\"3951\">\n<p data-start=\"3819\" data-end=\"3951\"><strong data-start=\"3819\" data-end=\"3854\">Systemic and contact fungicides<\/strong> (e.g., dithianon, pyrimethanil, cyprodinil, mancozeb) are used <strong data-start=\"3918\" data-end=\"3948\">in the pre-flowering stage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3952\" data-end=\"4033\">\n<p data-start=\"3954\" data-end=\"4033\"><strong data-start=\"3954\" data-end=\"3970\">Strobilurins<\/strong> (e.g., Stroby DF, Zato WG) are applied <strong data-start=\"4010\" data-end=\"4030\">during flowering<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4034\" data-end=\"4237\">\n<p data-start=\"4036\" data-end=\"4237\">Fungicides such as <strong data-start=\"4055\" data-end=\"4102\">Chorus 75 WG, Delan 700 WDG, Chromodin S-65<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"4108\" data-end=\"4121\">Stroby WG<\/strong> are also recommended from the <strong data-start=\"4152\" data-end=\"4173\">\u201cmouse ear\u201d stage<\/strong> onward using the <strong data-start=\"4191\" data-end=\"4207\">block method<\/strong> (two consecutive treatments).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4239\" data-end=\"4372\">\n<p data-start=\"4241\" data-end=\"4372\">\u26a0 Always consult the <strong data-start=\"4262\" data-end=\"4278\">FIS register<\/strong> for a list of approved plant protection products, as availability and regulations may change.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"4374\" data-end=\"4437\"><strong data-start=\"4374\" data-end=\"4394\">Spray intervals:<\/strong> 5\u20137 days, depending on weather conditions.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4439\" data-end=\"4442\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"4444\" data-end=\"4489\"><strong data-start=\"4448\" data-end=\"4489\">Environmental and Cultivation Factors<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"4491\" data-end=\"4925\">\n<li data-start=\"4491\" data-end=\"4580\">\n<p data-start=\"4493\" data-end=\"4580\"><strong data-start=\"4493\" data-end=\"4510\">April and May<\/strong> weather conditions (cool and wet) are most increases the chance of spread, as trees are in close proximity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4669\" data-end=\"4838\">\n<p data-start=\"4671\" data-end=\"4838\">If <strong data-start=\"4674\" data-end=\"4710\">primary infections are prevented<\/strong> (usually by <strong data-start=\"4723\" data-end=\"4736\">late June<\/strong>), the risk of <strong data-start=\"4751\" data-end=\"4793\">secondary summer infections is minimal<\/strong>, especially under <strong data-start=\"4812\" data-end=\"4835\">hot, dry conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4839\" data-end=\"4925\">\n<p data-start=\"4841\" data-end=\"4925\"><strong data-start=\"4841\" data-end=\"4864\">Later in the season<\/strong>, as apples mature, they become <strong data-start=\"4896\" data-end=\"4916\">less susceptible<\/strong> to scab.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4927\" data-end=\"5051\">During the summer, <strong data-start=\"4946\" data-end=\"4975\">10\u201320 day spray intervals<\/strong> using <strong data-start=\"4982\" data-end=\"5007\">protective fungicides<\/strong> are often sufficient for continued control.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5053\" data-end=\"5056\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"5058\" data-end=\"5097\"><strong data-start=\"5062\" data-end=\"5097\">Special Consideration for Pears<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5099\" data-end=\"5168\">There is a <strong data-start=\"5110\" data-end=\"5139\">key biological difference<\/strong> between apple and pear scab:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5170\" data-end=\"5466\">\n<li data-start=\"5170\" data-end=\"5254\">\n<p data-start=\"5172\" data-end=\"5254\">In <strong data-start=\"5175\" data-end=\"5184\">pears<\/strong>, <em data-start=\"5186\" data-end=\"5207\">Venturia inaequalis<\/em> <strong data-start=\"5208\" data-end=\"5235\">overwinters in the bark<\/strong> of young shoots.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5255\" data-end=\"5387\">\n<p data-start=\"5257\" data-end=\"5387\">In early spring, conidia emerge directly from this overwintering mycelium, infecting <strong data-start=\"5342\" data-end=\"5384\">young fruit during initial development<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5388\" data-end=\"5466\">\n<p data-start=\"5390\" data-end=\"5466\">Therefore, <strong data-start=\"5401\" data-end=\"5430\">early protection of
