Dendrometer for measuring the circumference – DC

DC series dendrometers are designed for precise and continuous measurement of changes in tree circumference. These devices are suitable for long-term use in outdoor environments. With their extremely low power consumption, Ecomatik dendrometers are ideal for battery-powered solutions, such as IoT applications.

Tree circumference changes are recorded using a metal cable that wraps around the tree. This cable is made from a special alloy with the lowest possible thermal expansion coefficient. Compared to steel tape, the temperature-dependent error is about 10 times smaller, eliminating the need for complex and error-prone correction calculations. Friction and pressure between the cable and the tree surface are reduced using special sliding rings.

DC1 Model

The simplest model in the DC series, the DC1, is attached to the measurement object using a spring-tensioned cable. The tension force is applied tangentially, and the circumference signal is recorded directly through the metal cable.

The DC3 and DC4 models are enhanced versions of the DC series. The tension force applied by the sensor spring to the measuring wire is directed radially rather than tangentially (as in the DC1). This patented design of the DC3 and DC4 dendrometers significantly improves the comparability of measurement data across objects with different diameters. Additionally, this design ensures stable installation on objects with both small and large diameters.

Advantages

  • Maximum stability against wind, snow, falling branches, and fruit
  • Simple and secure installation without damaging the tree
  • Accurate measurements, even for very large trees

Specific to DC3 and DC4 Models:

  • Suitable for trees of all diameters (> 5 cm)
  • Improved data comparability between trees with different diameters

Limitations

  • Not suitable for underwater or snow-covered measurements

Specific to the DC1 Model:

  • Measurement data between trees with very different diameters are generally not comparable.
  • Measurement values for trees with increasing diameters can be problematic due to reduced contact pressure between the cable and the tree surface.

Specific to DC3 and DC4 Models:

  • Raw measurement data must be converted to circumference in mm (an Excel program is available for this).
  • The cross-section of the measured object should be approximately circular.
