Plant water potential sensor

🌿 Plant Water Potential Sensor – FloraPulse Microtensiometer

The FloraPulse microtensiometer is an innovative yet proven MEMS sensor (micro-electromechanical system) for continuous measurement of water potential in woody plants. This sensor features a nanoporous silicon membrane with pore sizes of approximately 2 nanometers, allowing it to measure water potential as low as -35 bars!

After a simple installation process (approximately 20 to 30 minutes), where the microchip tensiometer is embedded into the plant’s woody tissue, the sensor provides real-time, continuous water potential data. This sensor replaces time-consuming, costly, and less reliable manual measurements using a pressure bomb in the field (a high-pressure instrument).

🌟 Benefits

  • Continuous real-time data on water potential
  • Can remain installed in the same tree for over a year (except in freezing conditions)
  • Easy installation in under 30 minutes
  • Wind- and rain-resistant installation, designed for field measurements
  • Extremely low power consumption, ideal for IoT applications

⚠️ Limitations

  • At very low water potentials (< -15 bars), sensor cavitation may occur
  • Exposure to temperatures below 0°C can cause sensor damage
